Colts general manager Chris Ballard said Thursday he wants Rivers to return, but there are other factors that have to be considered over the next month.

“So here’s the discussion I had with Philip, and I had it with (coach) Frank (Reich) and I’m talking with (owner) Mr. (Jim) Irsay this afternoon,” Ballard said during a video conference. “Do I think Philip can still play? Absolutely, I do. Philip and I had an hour talk yesterday. He’s going to take time, and we’re going to take some time, and we’ll meet here in about a month and figure out which way we’re going to go forward.

“Philip’s got to make a decision that for sure he wants to play. So we have to go through that process.

“Do I think Philip Rivers is a winning quarterback that we can win and go to the Super Bowl with? Absolutely.”

The 39-year-old free agent quarterback just completed his first season with the Colts after 16 seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. He completed 369 of 543 pass attempts this season for 4,169 yards and 24 touchdowns while being intercepted 11 times. He went 27-for-46 for 309 yards and two touchdowns in the Colts’ 27-24 loss at Buffalo in an AFC Wild Card game Saturday.

The Indianapolis Colts learned Wednesday that veteran quarterback Philip Rivers is retiring from the NFL after 17 seasons.

Having spent 16 of those 17 seasons with the San Diego and Los Angeles Chargers, the news broke Wednesday morning via the San Diego Union-Tribune.

That said, he also released a statement, which gave many thanks throughout this playing career:

“Every year, January 20th is a special and emotional day. It is St. Sebastian’s Feast day, the day I played in the AFC championship without an ACL, and now the day that after 17 seasons, I’m announcing my retirement from the National Football League. Thank you God for allowing me to live out my childhood dream of playing quarterback in the NFL.

I am grateful to the Chargers for 16 seasons, and the Colts for the 17th season.
